Como no decorrer da história os líderes Mórmon eram quem decidiam o que os membros iriam ler ou ser ensinados sobre a história da igreja, o crescimento foi garantido por muitos anos. Porém, com o advento da internet, muitas informações ficaram disponíveis e acessíveis a qualquer um, a qualquer hora.
Esse fato tem preocupado a liderança, pois controvérsias da história da igreja tem vindo à tona no meio dos membros, segundo o blog “O Contorno da Sombra”. O jornal “The Salt Lake Tribune”, da cidade Salt Lake City, capital do estado fundado por mórmons, Utah, publicou recentemente um artigo escrito pelo jornalista Peggy Fletcher Stak em que ele relata dois casos sintomáticos da crise: um professor da Escola Bíblica consultou a internet para preparar sua aula e descobriu que o Livro de Mórmon, base da religião, teria sido plagiado de uma outra obra. Há também o caso de um adolescente que pesquisando a história da igreja na internet, descobriu que o fundador da denominação, Joseph Smith, havia tido várias esposas e inclusive, casado com uma adolescente de 14 anos de idade.
Outras controvérsias da história dos Mórmons tem causado dúvida nos membros e provocado desligamentos da igreja, e a liderança teme que essa debandada aumente. As acusações de plágio, que também pairam sobre outro importante livro da religião, “A Pérola de Grande Valor”, e os 130 anos do banimento de negros da plena comunhão da igreja, são fatos históricos que perturbam tanto membros, quanto líderes mórmons.
Para reagir à crise, o líder e historiador oficial da Igreja de Jesus Cristo dos Santos dos Últimos Dias, Marlin Jensen, foi designado para responder às dúvidas dos membros e tentar acalmá-los. Em entrevista ao “Tribune”, Jensen declarou que “nunca antes tínhamos enfrentado essa era da informação, com redes sociais e blogs publicando pontos de vista sem investigá-los adequadamente. A igreja está preocupada com a desinformação e informações distorcidas, mas estamos fazendo o nosso melhor e tentando duramente fazer com que a nossa história seja contada de maneira acurada”.
