Last week one Christian preacher was arrested in London for preaching on the streets about the Biblical passage 1 Thess 4:1-12, stating that homosexuality is a sin. Tony Miano was taken into custody by the police and held for seven hours, and then released without charge.
After his arrest, Miano said he was surprised by the fact that "the country that produced the Magna Carta" for people to be arrested for what they say. He further stated that the "Thought Police" is acting in Britain, in allusion to the book 1984 by George Orwell, where there was a group responsible for police to punish people who had different thoughts of established authorities.
According to Miano, one of the people present during his preaching called police, who took him in handcuffs. He also says that the person who called the police did accusing him of being homophobic.
- The language I used was not homophobic, and I was not promoting the fear or hatred of homosexuals. I began my message assuring the people that my message was not of hatred, but of love. I was simply explaining a Bible passage that speaks of sexual immorality and that people should refrain from it. I just do not talk about homosexuality as a form of sexual immorality, but also about any kind of sex outside of marriage between a man and a woman, and lustful thoughts. All these positions are considered traditional Christian and has been taught and believed by Christians for thousands of years - explained Tony Miano, according to Charisma News.
- It was very distressing to be arrested and interrogated by openly express my Christian beliefs. When the interrogation began, it became clear that it was about more than the incident that happened on the street, but about what I believed and how I think. I was being questioned about my thoughts. This ... is the basic definition of the Thought Police - completed the Christian, who was interrogated while in prison and had the support of a lawyer's Christian Legal Centre.
The police arrived to inform the lawyer that would be formally charged by Miano, when asked, said that would not give up continue expressing their opinions on the subject. But a few hours later he was informed that he would be released without charges.
Andrea Minichiello Williams, CEO of the Christian Legal Centre, said the arrest of Miano is a warning of what can happen ahead if the government approves marriage between same sex.
- If we continue the current trajectory, the arrest of Tony will be just the first of many - Williams said, further stating that already exists in the country repression of freedom of expression.
A police spokesman said Miano was taken custody due to reports that he was disturbing the public order, to utter homophobic comments.
